# Create a Telegram bot with BotFather

Create your own bot, protect its token and prepare it for TGDog.

AT A GLANCE
- Use the official BotFather account.

- Keep your bot token private.

- Add the bot to a test supergroup before using member actions.

## [Before you create your bot](https://tgdog.wadesk.io/guide/create-bot/#before-you-create-your-bot)

Start with a dedicated bot for TGDog. You need a Telegram account to create it, but you do not need to write code or host a bot server.

## [Create your bot in six steps](https://tgdog.wadesk.io/guide/create-bot/#create-your-bot-in-six-steps)

- Open official BotFather. Use [@BotFather](https://t.me/BotFather) in Telegram and press Start if shown.

- Send `/newbot`. BotFather will ask for your bot’s display name.

- Choose a display name. For example, `My Community Guard`. This is the name members see.

- Choose a unique username. Use letters, numbers, or underscores; it must be 5–32 characters and end in `bot`. Example: `my_community_guard_bot`. If taken, try another. The example is not a link or an available-name guarantee.

- Save the API token privately. BotFather returns your bot’s link and token. Copy the token without sharing it. If compromised or lost, use BotFather’s `/token` command to generate a new one.

- Connect it inside TGDog. Open the extension’s Bot connection screen, paste the token, and connect. Confirm the verified bot identity before continuing to the group setup below.

## [Protect the token and prepare permissions](https://tgdog.wadesk.io/guide/create-bot/#protect-the-token-and-prepare-permissions)

Treat the token like a password. Paste it only into the TGDog extension, never into this website or a support message.

Next, add your bot to a test supergroup and promote it to administrator in the group’s settings. Grant deletion and member-restriction permissions if you plan to use automatic actions. Continue with [bot connection and update delivery](https://tgdog.wadesk.io/guide/connect-bot/) and [supergroup permissions](https://tgdog.wadesk.io/guide/group-rules/).

## [Check your setup](https://tgdog.wadesk.io/guide/create-bot/#check-your-setup)

- Use the official BotFather account.

- Keep your bot token private.

- Add the bot to a test supergroup before using member actions.
